Games are usually treated as escape — a way to relax, unwind, or pass time. But a steady stream of psychology and education research, much of it in the past fifteen years, suggests that play also feeds creativity. Five mechanisms keep showing up in the literature.
Cognitive flexibility
Cognitive flexibility — the ability to switch between tasks and adapt to new situations quickly — is one of the strongest correlates of creative output. A 2013 study by Lorenza Colzato and colleagues at Leiden University found that regular video-game players performed measurably better on cognitive-flexibility tasks than non-gamers, with the effect concentrated in players of action games where rapid context-switching is part of the gameplay.
Divergent thinking
Divergent thinking — generating many possible solutions to a single problem — is the most-tested operationalization of creativity. Linda Jackson and colleagues (2012, Computers in Human Behavior) reported a positive association between video-game play and divergent-thinking scores in children. The effect was modest but statistically reliable, and held across genres rather than concentrating in any single one.
Problem solving
Strategic and puzzle-driven games appear to transfer their problem-solving demands into general ability. The clearest demonstration is Shute, Ventura, and Ke's 2015 study in Computers & Education: participants who played Portal 2 — which trains spatial reasoning and means-end planning — improved on standardized problem-solving tests more than a control group who played a brain-training app marketed for the same purpose.
Flow
Mihály Csíkszentmihályi's flow — the state of complete absorption in a task at the upper edge of one's ability — is a recurring substrate for creative work. Games are unusually good at producing it: feedback is fast, difficulty calibrates dynamically, and goals are unambiguous. A 2017 review by Perttula and colleagues in the International Journal of Serious Games found that flow-conducive game design correlated with measurable gains in player creativity and problem-solving.
Collaborative creativity
Multiplayer games turn creativity into a social act. Players coordinating around a shared goal must invent strategies, adapt them in real time, and communicate through limited channels — exactly the conditions that working teams face under deadline. Vorderer, Klimmt, and Ritterfeld's 2004 work on cooperative play remains the foundational citation; subsequent research has extended it to esports, MMOs, and educational settings.
Gaming has earned its place beyond entertainment. Each of the five mechanisms above is independently useful — together, they suggest games are among the most efficient creativity exercises a person can do, provided the game is chosen for the kind of cognition the player wants to train.
